Our
Mission
WSR is committed to the creation
of radio broadcasting by and for a public of diverse cultures, ages,
income levels, and backgrounds, under-served and under-represented by
other area media. WSR shall provide musical,
cultural, and informational programming that celebrates and expresses
the diversity of the community. It shall provide a voice for groups in
the community that may otherwise go unheard, sustaining a forum for
alternative points of view on local, national, and international
issues, with particular awareness to women, students, labor,
minorities, and other public interest constituencies. WSR will promote
understandings between cultures and serve as a catalyst for positive
social change within the community. WSR will provide programming,
access, and training to the community, with significant participatory
opportunities to students from the local school districts and other
area schools and colleges.
What is West Side Radio?
Non-profit:
WSR will be
affiliated with a
local non-profit educational and cultural organization with 501 (c)
(3)
tax-exemption status from the Internal Revenue Service.
Non-commercial:
WSR will be supported through
memberships, donations, underwriting, grants, fundraisers, and
volunteering.
Public Radio: Programming
will be produced by and
for the people WSR serves.
All Volunteer: We
believe in the power of
community public radio.
Alternative
Media: We
will provide different points of
view as an alternative to mainstream sound bites.
Interactive
Media: We will encourage direct participation
of the community through an open door policy.
Quality Programming: In
addition to the large
quantity of quality local music, news, and talk programming expected,
WSR will seek out excellent alternative syndicated programming.
Diversity: News and information from around
the world, but with emphasis on what's happening locally. Music from
folk to rock, from bluegrass to Celtic, Native Peoples to music from
India and the subcontinent, Cajun
to Texas roots, blues, live music from our studios, and more.
Culture: We are
educators. By offering a
variety of tonal, rhythmic and harmonic styles, WSR educates listeners
about music. We'll provide a venue for
dissenting opinions and lively debate, challenging the status quo and
stretching the thought process of our listeners. WSR encourages local
and regional singers, musicians, actors, and other artisans of sound.
Outreach: We'll
promote local, state, and national live music
concerts. We'll serve the under-served, such as minorities and
youth the world through music, news, and information. We'll involve our
listeners, with candidate forums,
interactive talk, and volunteerism. Community public service
announcements (PSA) will be solicited. We'll encourage participation
from community
speakers
regarding public information. We'll have an open door policy. Everyone
can
participate, whether on the air or behind the scenes.
